Factors Affecting Health Outcomes in African American Women

Phrased as the “Superwoman Schema,” researchers have suggested that health disparities in African American women can be linked to excessive stress and coping. Due to the fact that African American women attempt to tackle on many facets of life, they are constantly struck with high levels of stress which stem from each facet in order fulfill the role of The Strong Black Woman/Superwoman. While many of these individuals do experience certain benefits in life such as preservation of self and family/community, there is clear evidence that liabilities, such as negative health outcomes, also exist.
